  1. Wow, what an inspirational gal!!You both are so special and with your tremendous faith and all your friends praying and thinking positive thoughts, beautiful Jennene is going to be just fine.
Thank you so much for letting us know and for allowing our prayers to join with yours to keep Jennene safe!
    Love & miss you!

  2. Sam…Ouch.

Yes, this is a journey many are traveling on both together and alone. I know you are very affected and concerned. My love and prayers are with you. Jennene is so lucky to have you. You are a wonderful friend and warrior for our Lord.

I so appreciated Jennene’s email. She is approaching this with her usual calm and her outstanding faith. I’m proud & inspired.

    I love you!

  3. Wow…I’m so sad to hear that she has cancer at such an early age! I loved reading what you had to say about her and what she had to say about the cancer….already a testimony to those around her! You two were always such a welcome laugh in college and I’m sure you continue to be….even in trials like this. Thanks for letting me know so that I can be praying for her!

  4. Thanks for passing this on Sam.
I’m very sorry to hear about Jennene.
I’ll keep she and Eric in my prayers (as well as the medical community as they work to help her get well).
    Love, Tricia

  5. Thanks for sending this email on – very sad to hear that this is part of Jennene’s reality in life right now but cool and encouraging to hear her words and those of Piper that she passed on. I will be praying for her.

  6. Thank you for sharing this news with me.. cancer is also apart of our lives too. I am out of school for the semester and would love to set up a lunch date with everyone. I miss you all so much! Please extend my best to the Margraves. I will keep all of them, especially Mrs. Margrave, in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks.

  7. Hi Sammy,
I will keep Jennene in my prayers. I am remembering what Aunt Miz would always say….”give praise to God in all things…the seemingly good and the seemingly bad”. I know there is a gift in all of this.
    Please give her our love.

  8. Hi Sam,
WOW total shocker!! Thank you for sharing. I think the real battle is in the mind and Jennene seems to have that covered, as well as the best doctor possible GOD. I always say he gives us no more than what we can handle ( although sometimes I wonder if he mixes us up) (HA)
Sam I could not think of a better person to take a journey with, you & Jennene will now have a new adventure in live and I feel God will bring you even closer. My advise (for what its worth) is be the wonderful friend you’ve always been, strong, funny, faithful and dependable. Hey I look forward to hearing the stories, and if I see you with your head shaved I’ll know why!!
I will keep Jennene and Eric as well as you close in prayer.

  9. Hi Jennene, I just read your powerful email, and will keep you in my prayers. You are inspirational!

  10. Jennene, I just saw Sam’s post. Know that we will be praying for your treatment and for God’s grace to be shown in great ways to you and Eric through this trial. From the email you wrote, I can see that you are already taking the opportunity to be a light to others during the trial and we are encouraged and challenged by that.

  11. Hey Jennene, I just read Sam’s post, and wanted to let you know that we will keep you in our prayers.

  12. Jennene, I just read Sam’s post. We are praying for you. Please keep us up to date so we can continue to pray for you.

  17. Jennene! I just read your email…I am sorry my friend. I will pray for you. Keep us posted…this stuff isn’t supposed to happen to people I know- especially when we are still young. Thanks for your godly response. I know God’s ways and plans are above our own. Keep your eyes on Jesus. I love you! Oh and have a great Christmas vacation! (It is one of the joys that keeps teachers sane!)

  18. I’m praying too, and thanking the Lord for you and Eric.

  19. We just read Sam’s note and we are grieved for you and your husband and yet hopeful. My mother and grandmother are breast cancer survivors. I don’t know the type of cancer you are fighting or how progressed it is but we are going to pray. We will pray believing that you will be a survivor and have a testimony of healing whether through … Read Moretreatment or miraculous intervention (both would be mraculous). I hope you are able to be filledl by the Lord with whatever you need. We are truly sad in our hearts for you. We hope in the Lord

  20. praying for you and thankful for all the ways that the Lord will use this in your life and in the lives of all you come across throughout everything! please keep us posted and let us all know how we can be praying for you more specifically! as a fellow English teacher, I will be sure to pray about all of the tedious grading and everything you will have to deal with in the midst of everything. maybe in a way, that will help keep you busy and keep your mind focused on other things! 🙂

  21. Jennene–

I will be praying for you and Eric. I was not super thrilled to hear about this. Not that you would expect me to be super thrilled. I think you know what I mean.

On the bright side, I don’ t think that cancer interferes with your many special talents, like playing the harmonica with your nose.

If there’s anything I can do other than pray, please let me know. I mean it, that’s not just a platitude.

  22. Neener,

Echoing everyone’s thoughts, prayers, and well wishes. You’re on and in my heart. I am comforted knowing that you’re in good hands… both human and divine. 🙂 Love, Summer

  23. Hi All,
As you might know, it’s sure difficult being so far away at a time like this. So I’m learning the ins and outs of this blog and facebook. I so appreciate the caring concern and prayers from so many for our daughter-in- law. She’s the closest thing to a daughter we have, and consider ourselves very fortunate to have her. So we cheer you on Jennene, along with y’all!
    Love, Mom and Larry

  24. Hi Jennene! I love you and I think you are the most mature, courageous woman of God I know. I will be here for you if you need to talk or pray. Jon and I send our prayers and hugs!

Hi Sam, you are such an awesome friend to her to do this for her and say these things about her. I agree, she is all of those things you’ve said.

  25. I’m overwhelmed with thankfulness for you all, and these words of encouragement are so, so kind and so what I needed to hear. God’s goodness is evident here on this page. I’m thankful for technology that can bring you all near, though many of you are far away.
My mom shared this very apropos story with me about God as refiner of silver:
    God bless you all!

Jennene, As you know…trials are always ways God can show His glory. You have had a testimony for many years of God’s faithfulness. I remember that from all the years ago when you & Sam would sing together at TMC. That has lived in my memory. And as I see you & Sam on facebook and how the Lord has directed in your lives, know that He will continue to do that. He has a plan for you. Your cancer will not be wasted. What an incredible outlook you already have!

We all face hardships and trials, and I will sure be praying for the path that God is laying out before you in this situation.

    All my prayers!

Hey Jennene!! You are awesome! Always of the best quality and I praise God for you. After I heard the news, and then picked my jaw up off the floor, I just did not know what to say. It all sounded like clichés. I am sure there will be highs and lows, but I am confident that you will see God’s hand in it all. In the midst of our struggles, Heather and I often look backward thankfully and see what has done in our lives. But then we look forward and say, “Lord, we cannot face another day of this!” Yet, He always faithfully supplies what we need and we do make it through. Just know that we will be praying for you and hope to see you sometime soon.

I know this is a bit cheese… but… Jesus has your cancer! He always has. By his stripes you ARE healed. He will use you in so many avenues to minister to others. I have found that out of my weaknesses he makes me stronger. You are so courageous. I am expecting a miracle for you. Of course I will be praying and will pass on your diagnosis to our crisis prayer team at church. Kisses-Kelly

    Hey there, checking in…

  50. Hi Jennene,
It’s been years and years since we’ve seen each other but my parents have always kept me posted with any updates that come their way….this news being the most recent. Reading through all the words written about you, I can see your the same as I remember….sweet and full of life, with an amazing love for the Lord. We’ve shared many a laugh back in the day and I’ve always enjoyed your family. I’ll never forget having your mom as my nurse when I had my first daughter, almost 17 years ago (can you believe that one?). And if you’d like to hear something really hysterical, I’m pregnant as we speak…..the Lord’s definately laughing. I now have a 16 year old, 10 year old twins and one on the way….the road is long, lol!
All that aside, I just want you to know that we love you and are praying for you! I will definately be checking in to see how you’re doing! The verse on my calendar for today is….Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” How fitting!!!
Big hugs to you too Sam, keep me posted. Hope you’ll be in our area soon, so we can see each other and you can rub your hands together till they burn!
    Love you guys!
    Danielle (Andy & kids too!)

  51. To our sweet and beautiful Jennene.
How blessed is our God And Lord Jesus Christ!
We have known you from a baby, to your wedding day,and now to this challenge in your life. Your testimony is so encouraging to us. Your love for, and your faith in our God is so evident. How wonderful and loving our God is! Life brings challenging things but God directs our lives. We are his and he wants his perfect will in our lives. Keep looking, trusting, and hoping in him.
    We love you!
    Connie & Sissy Isaiah 26:3

Hey Jenine its early in the morning here in Brazil. I just want you to know that I’m praying for you right now! I have always been encouraged by your easy going spirit and peace in the LORD. I will be praying that the LORD gives you greater grace into the insight of His will on this and that you experience peace that transcends all understanding. I’m very thankful that Sam set this up. LORD willing when I’m back in the states we will all have to sit down and have a get together. LORD Bless you Jennene(Psalm 55:22, and Eph. 3:20) Paulo

  62. Our thought and prayers are with you both and your families. Kelly had us playing that card game that i broke your fingernail playing. Kathy was playing with us this time and I almost did the same thing to her. Dangerous game I guess, but alot of fun. Just remembering and missing the fun times we have spent together. Next time we visit you!

  63. I know this will all come out fine. You are strong, faithful and have many friends and family around you. Its a lousy time of year to go through the chemo but then again its a good time of year as it is a time of faith and fewer worries. We are with you in prayer and thoughts. Hang in there Eric as I know this is difficult for you as well.

  88. Hello Jennene! My name is Kristen Ready and I am the daughter of a friend of your mom’s (through BSF) Barbara Inchausti. Well that was long-winded! My mom forwarded the link to your site here this morning and I am so thankful that she did. We’ve had you in our prayers since we first heard of your cancer but spending time on this site has just filled me up with “tear spilling joy” this morning. Perspective is a word I’m beginning to really understand recently and reading about your joy that you have in the middle of this trial is so inspiring to me. My husband and our two boys are I are dealing with my husband’s having been laid off recently (after having been with the same company for over a decade) and while I am seeing so many blessings that come from REALLY relying on God’s plan in your life and not your own, I’m having so much trouble feeling joy in the middle of it. I feel closer to Him than I’ve ever felt before and am keenly aware of all of these blessings in the middle of this new path, but am really not doing it the way He wants me to. He tells me to do it with a happy heart, just the way you are doing it. I just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you and your husband and your friends are to me. You are certainly surrounded by wonderful, faith-filled people. Our church (Golden Hills in Brentwood, CA – Northern Cal) recently had Laura Story perform during our Christmas Women’s Dinner. She is the song writer who wrote Indescribable and Mighty to Save. At any rate, shortly after she married her college sweetheart, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and though their road has been sometimes rocky in her husband’s treatment, her story is so inspiring and so is her music. She has a website you may want to check out. Sorry to carry on so. Please know that you are in my prayers each and every day (and many times throughout as the Lord brings you to my mind when I find myself murmuring). What a wonderful gift you are giving to everyone who reads this.

    In His Love,

    Kristen Ready

  89. Oh and one other song that is my new favorite as of late is Sanctus Real’s “Whatever You’re Doing”. Sorry for another huge entry, but here are the lyrics:

It’s time for healing time to move on
It’s time to fix what’s been broken too long
Time make right what has been wrong
It’s time to find my way to where I belong
    There’s a wave that’s crashing over me
All I can do is surrender

Whatever you’re doing inside of me
It feels like chaos somehow there’s peace
It’s hard to surrender to what I can’t see
but I’m giving in to something heavenly

    Time for a milestone
    Time to begin again
    Revaluate who I really am
Am I doing everything to follow your will
or just climbing aimlessly over these hills
So show me what it is you want from me
    I give everything I surrender…

    Time to face up
    Clean this old house
Time to breathe in and let everything out
That I’ve wanted to say for so many years
Time to to release all my held back tears

Whatever you’re doing inside of me
It feels like chaos but I believe
You’re up to something bigger than me
    Larger than life something heavenly

Whatever you’re doing inside of me
It feels like chaos but now I can see
    This something bigger than me
    Larger than life something heavenly
    Something heavenly

    It’s time to face up

    Sink Your Roots into God
    Daily Inspiration (M–F)

From Praying the Names of God
    by Ann Spangler

My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken (Psalm 62:1–2).

Perfect peace, rest, unshakable faith, salvation—these enduring promises belong to all who trust in God. These blessings come, not by wishing but by willing, by deciding to sink our roots into God, spending time in prayer, reading his Word, holding fast to his commandments, and yielding to his Spirit at work within us. Scripture tells us we are to live and move and have our being in the God who made us. When tragedy comes, as it inevitably will, and when the world around us begins to tremble and shake, as it inevitably will, we will not be shaken. Instead, the Lord who is the Rock eternal will be there, giving us rest and peace.

    J, You’ll love this. 🙂
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “H-M-M… Read More, ” she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did and she had a grand day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well,” she said, “Today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.” So she did and she had a fun, fun day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “YEAH!” she exclaimed, “I don’t have to fix my hair today!”
Attitude is everything. As the saying goes: “The kind of life you will have isn’t determined by what happens to you, it’s determined by your reaction to what happens to you.”

Well…I’m going to say the common denominator between all the people reading this is that they’re all friends with YOU. So there’s your answer 🙂

  100. heyy Miss Margrave ,
We all miss you in avid , we have a new teacher she seems nice , but not as nice as you. i just wanted to tell you that when i found out i was in shock , but i am happy to hear that your staying postive. I love and am a very postive person! your such a great teacher and avid wont be the same with out you. i will be thinking of yu and praying for you… thank you for making avid so fun. see you soon !
    from Nikki Murray

  101. Hi Mrs. Margrave 🙂
Well the AVID class and I just received the news today and we were all very shocked :/ However, when Ms. Neylan told us how positive you were thinking and that you were happy at home, that definitely calmed me down.
I am going to miss you very much and the class will be very different without you. The new teacher is very nice and the class already likes her too 🙂 So hopefully you won’t be getting any bad stories about us.
From the pictures on your blog, I see you are very into church. So am I 🙂 My mom and I started going to Agape Church down in Culver City. It’s with Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith. My mom and I go to the service around 6 pm. It’s soo relaxing and very open as well. Everyone is invited to join. Maybe you and your husband would like to come with us 😀
I have to get back to homework 😛 My mom and I send all of our love and I can’t wait to hear from you soon!!!

  102. Hi Jennene,

This website is wonderfully inspirational! I recently found out about your challenge and simply want to send my prayers and love. If you need a room to hold the Invisible Children Club I’d be glad to do it.

I spoke with Sam and she updated me on your progress. Keep the faith and try to enjoy your time off.

Kathy and I send all our love and can’t wait for you to return.

    Best… Bobby and Kathy

  103. Hi Jennene, just so you know – there is at least one Jew praying for you also – Couldn’t hurt! Take care.

  105. hey mrs.margrave!!
i no all 2 well what your going through this is starting 2 remind me of my mom its good that your asking god for help and praying i hope all the treatment works because it would suck 2 loose a teacher to it also
its good that ur having fun with it hope it all works

  106. hello mrs. margrave…. this isnt really a question but i guess this is a way to get in touch with you rather than just email your school e-mail
but i dont even know if you go on that anymore… but yeah

mrs. Varner or whatever our new teachers name is doesnt let us play ghost in the graveyard because we will “break” stuff …!!!
    But besides that
yeah everyone was puzzled why you werent there on the first day
and when the news was dropped
    every one was quite
    heavy stuff,
Our new teacher besides from the games is really hyper and “girly girlish”
not to say thats a bad thing
    she seems cool
her class routine is alittle annoying
like today when we were reading in our R books she made each of us stand up and then made each of us read a sentence and then we got to sit down
    At 8 in the morning!
she is like, i dont know.. strict but cool
I guess i should talk less about the new teacher
    i mean this isnt

I dont even know if this whole letter will make sense
    but yeah

i hope you get through this

Hey E! Thanks for the encouraging message. It is helpful to know people are praying because it reminds me to be faithful to pray as well. I tend to get down and focus on the circumstances rather than God. Wow, didn’t meant to get all deep on ya. Yes, I want Andruw Jones as far away from the Dodgers as possible. He makes me want to vomit more than this baby does!! Now, if we could just get that Manny guy tied down….

  111. Hey Jeanne, I used to sit in on your 9th grade English class at VHS when I was working in RS. I am sorry to hear you have cancer. I spent 15 years as a medical transcriber in Radiation Oncology and am very familiar with all the treatments, etc. I love to read your blog and your wonderful strength in God. It inspires me to pursue God in a stronger fashion. Keep up with your guitar playing and music, as this is God’s healing power. I am having my church pray for you as well as my bible study group.

  112. Happy Birthday Jennene!!
We hope everything went well with the chemo today.
We have been keeping up with the updates (Thanks Sam) and will continue to pray. As we read the words of encouragement and see know how many people are praying for you, we are reminded of Psalm 34:15

The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry.

There are many crying out to the Lord for you and He is Attentive! May He continue to flood you with His love, mercy, and grace. You are such an inspiration to us.

  120. PRAYING FOR YOU, JENNENE! I have always loved your sweet voice leading us into the very presence of God during worship at church. You are not aware of how many times you and all the worship team have encouraged me! Just know that so many are praying for you and we’re here to help, too. Put me on the list for rides or errands, especially in the morning. I live very close to you, so don’t hesitate to call me even on short notice!

  131. I had a lot of thinking/reflecting/praying time yesterday as I was driving back from Scotland with a group of airmen for the 3 day weekend. I’m just continually grateful that I had a wonderful season to hang out with you and everyone else from that little Baptist Church in Walnut Creek. I was able to learn and grow so much in my faith during that time. Then there is all the support while I was in the USAF. Now I get to do my little part in Kingdom building. All this to say, that you have played such a big part in the people i get to share the Grace of God with. Thanks for always being such blessing.
I’m also glad to see you use a Mac.

Jennene, I am praying that God will give you strength, hope and opportunities to share Christ with those around you. Here are two passages that have always given me encouragement during difficult times. I hope they encourage you today as well. II Corinthians 4 : 5 – 16 & Isaiah 55

  174. Hi there. I was reading the Valley of Vision today and typed some of it to someone who has been having a hard day and saw the struggle you are dealing with. Here is a little bit:
    Valley of Vision:
Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly,
Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
    where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.
    Let me learn by paradox
that the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is the healed heart,
that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
that to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
that to give is to receive,
that the valley is the place of vision.
Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,
    and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
    thy life in my death,
    thy joy in my sorrow,
    thy grace in my sin,
    thy riches in my poverty
    thy glory in my valley.

    Praying for you, dear sister.

I remember how up and down all this can be. I pray that you will be able to cling to Jesus through it all, that you will feel His presence and love surrounding you. God never wastes a hurt, and He will use this, too.

    Love, Heather

We are praying for you here. It was quite a shock to learn about your cancer, but you have great faith, strength, and courage. I hope you can feel his presence like never before.

BTW, I miss the ol’ Soul Fishers days at FBCWC and Napolean’s house. I haven’t picked up my guitar in a long time, but I do hope to get back to playing bass guitar again soon.

Hi Jennene, Let’s do Wednesday (4/22)…I was going to bring a Mexican Lasagna…does that sound OK? I use ground turkey and it also has corn and black beans (and cheese!) If that sounds too spicy or won’t agree with you, we can certainly come up with something else! 😉 Also, if I deliver around 6:00 p.m., will that be OK?

Thanks for dropping Holden’s vest off and for sharing your lemons! Hope you’re resting and feeling OK today…thinking of you! XOXO

I was at UCLA medical center in the oncology department today & being there made me think of you frequently. At one point in time I was interacting with the patients receiving their chemo treatments & made what you’re going through so much more real to me. I’m thankful to know that God is using you in a unique way for His kingdom and want you to know that you are a blessing!!

Thanks for your email…so humbling (honestly) that you take the time to say thank you! I thought of you today b/c I cut over 10″ off my hair and donated to locks of love 🙂 Praying for you and wanted you to know you’ve been such a testimony and blessing to me!

  201. Facebook Comment 4/21/09
I was with a friend going through diagnosis stages (of something totally non-cancer related)…we walked out with better news than we went in expecting. The appointment happened to be in the oncology building, though. Still trying to figure that one out. I got to walk through the treatment areas and chat with a couple of patients while I was there. So cool and sobering and humbling and thought-provoking all at the same time… 🙂

A highschool girl was baptized on Sunday and she talked in her testimony about understanding true beauty in God’s eyes and talked about 1 Peter 3. As I look at the daily pics. and read the updates, I so see that beauty in you. I have always admired you, your gentle quiet spirit! Thank you for continuing to be such an example to me, and also to my girls.

  203. I have you listed in my favorites with the words you first used to tell us about your journey: “Weird, I have cancer.” You’ll have to change that to HAD in the very near future.
We’re all still praying. Our small group feels like they know you personally. Love ya from both of us.

  204. Go Dodgers!!
Larry tells me they were 10 & 0!
It’s so good to learn you are spunking up.
After chemo, the rest of this is going to be a walk in the park. Dr. Shin seems like a very caring person. You deserve no less. See you soon. Mom C

  205. Jennie

I just wanted to tell you –I really admire & love the way you have handled such a big bump in the road of life.

I pray for you each day. I know the Lord will continue to hold you in a big hug.

    He’s cute too!

  214. Having worked in radiation/oncology as a medical transcriber for 15 years, I am all too well at the radiation treatment process, although it has been some time since I last worked there. In any case, a heads up on radiation burn. We had a doctor recommend using Bag Balm that you can get in a feed store for radiation burns. Aquafor is another ointment they used. I know you will do fine with the remainder of your treatments. They are a breeze. We at VHS look forward to your return.

  215. You’ve written a very excellent blog post.
If it’s fine with you, I would like to ask permission to use your article as it fits to my obstruction. I will be glad to negotiate to pay you or hire you for this.

  217. J, you have been such an inspiration through this journey. It has been encouraging to see Him who has begun a good work in you continue to complete it.
Always rejoicing in Him, Chip and Karen
